The Six: The Untold Story of RMS Titanic's Chinese Passengers

The story of the six Chinese survivors of the Titanic disaster has been forgotten by history. In “The Six”, we learn how these remarkable men beat the odds to make it out alive, only to be singled out for expulsion from the US within 24 hours of their arrival. We track down their descendants for the first time – and find out how a nation-wide policy of exclusion led to a century of struggle and secrets for their families. Their attempts to penetrate the deeply unjust prohibitions on Chinese immigration take us deep inside an untold story about the migrant experience, torn between ties to the home country, riven by civil war, and constantly thwarted hopes for a fresh start. “The Six” shines a new light on one of the twentieth century’s most infamous and intriguing events, tracing its relevance and impact up to the present day.

    The Poseidon Project

Beijing-based scuba instructor Steven Schwankert's six-year search for HMS Poseidon was a private obsession that challenged official accounts of the submarine's fate, the accident that sank it, and the remarkable escape that followed. In 1931, Britain's most advanced naval vessel collided with a cargo ship off the coast of China. Three hours later, six sailors surfaced, led by an Irish Petty Officer called Willis. They were the first men ever to escape from a sunken submarine using scuba devices. But their names, and submarine, sank into obscurity, until Steven's work put them back into the news for totally new reasons.

    A Farewell Song

After distinguished careers in China’s state-run orchestras, four musicians retire to enjoy family life and the relative freedoms of the 21st century. But the prospect of one last – and independent – concert reunites them and calls them back to the stage. This is more than a farewell to the music they love; it is their chance to pass it on, renewed, to a wider audience. As the event draws near, a sudden tragedy compels them to reflect on their shared past – five decades of remarkable music that has kept them going through hardship and upheaval.
